I know John Carpenter's original Halloween sits atop a pedestal, but I'm actually more a fan of Halloween III, which has NOTHING to do with the original.
In the wake of Halloween II, they had the rather clever idea (no sarcasm intended) of trying to turn the series into an anthology, with a different story each year. I think this was a genius move, but one made too late. The first sequel permanently bound the murderous Michael Myers to the title, so, if he didn’t show up, the fans weren’t going to be happy.
Halloween III bombed. Unfairly, I think, as it’s a deliciously menacing film with a bat-sh*t crazy plot about a coven of witches using a mix of technology and magic to melt children’s faces off. I’m talking PROPER gore here. Not that PG13 bullsh*t that plagues “horror” films these days.
